Field Trip to Killaun Bog Reserve

Killaun bog is a "raised bog". We learned all about raised bogs and the flora and fauna in SESE. After all our learning, we went to Killaun bog to discuss some of the things we had learned about. Ms Flynn from Birr Community School and some students accompanied Ms Walsh and our class. We brought nets for pond dipping and quadrat's to look at plant species. First we investigated the plant life in different parts of the bog. We identified ling heather, bog asphodel, crossed leaved heather, sundews, lichens and in the water we found marsh marigolds. The most enjoyable part of the trip was the pond dipping. We found lots of newts and newt tadpoles. Most of us including Ms Walsh had never seen a newt before.
