Heritage day in Scoil Naomh Eoin

As part our Heritage day, we invited Melanie Lorien to our school.
She visited us on the 6th of October 2010. Melanie is a professional corn Dolly maker. She told us all about the traditions associated with straw in Ireland. Melanie showed us how to make a harvest knot using oaten straw. She also showed us other crafts from straw.5th and 6th class did a drama about a wedding. The "straw boys" came to dance. They disguised themselves by wearing straw masks. We got to wear them; we even had a bride and groom. We danced around and had lots of fun. Long ago the straw boys visited weddings. It was important to make them feel welcome; otherwise they could bad lock on the couple or the farm.
