Flag Raising
During Active Week in Rath N.S, the Active School Flag was raised by two pupils surrounded by teachers, pupils, parents and members from the wider community. After the flag raising Damien Dillon former pupil and Operation Transformation Leader led a kilometre walk on the school grounds.
The school was delighted to welcome Martin Byrne a mountaineer, the only Offaly man to conquer Mt Everest.
All students from 1st – 6th class commenced a six week swimming programme in Birr Pool.
Pauline Curley an Olympian athlete gave the pupils tips on long distance running, sprinting, warm-ups and spoke about the importance of cooling down after exercise.
All pupils enjoyed a golf taster during Active Week too.
An Active School is a school that strives to achieve a physically educated and active school community.
The Active School Flag was applied for in 2014 following a seminar in Laois Education Centre. It highlighted that four out of five children are not getting the recommended sixty minutes a day of exercise.
Elections were held and pupils were elected from each class and a committee was formed led by Ms. Howell and Ms. Maher along with members from the community Joe O’Brien and John Leahy.
Our Active School Motto is
“Be active and exercise
Run and jump and energise
Ride your bike or take a hike
Agus bí ag siúl
For an active school”

On Friday 5th February Damien Dillon who got to the last 20 in this years series of Operation Transformation and a former past pupil of the school came in to do some activities with us but unfortunately the elements were not in our favour but we still had fun.
Inspection
On Tuesday February 9th we had our Active School Flag inspection. Mr Declan McGovern from the Mayo Education Centre came to do our inspection, he was very impressed with the amount of activity that is done on a daily basis, and also thought our Activity Log Book was a fantastic idea (well done Ms.Howell). On Wednesday Feb 24th a parcel came and we were delighted when it was opened and our Active School flag was inside. We will raise the flag during Active week (dates and information to follow). Well done to all involved.

Update
Work is continuing for our 'Active School Flag', in early September Ms Howell and Ms Maher worked very diligently to get the application form filled up and sent in. We are in the process of electing two new members to replace the two students who have moved on to secondary school we would like to wish them all the best for the future and thank them for their help. The committee meet to discuss what needs to be done i.e running tracks marked out etc. laps are been done each day weather permitting. They also came up with the idea of "Football Free Friday" this means every friday that games are played that don't involve football/basketball, this is proving very popular and new games are being learned. Keep an eye for more news and pictures!!!
Active School Flag
We in Scoil Náisiunta Naomh Eoin are currently working towards receiving an 'Active School Flag'. This highlights the importance of physical activity and sport in schools and communities in which they are based. The programme encourages all schools to evaluate their current provision of P.E and extracurricular sports to children and to examine whether they can be improved upon. it is the overall aim of Scoil Naomh Eoin to provide a wide and varied physical health programme for children both during allocated P.E times and extracurricular activities. We want to raise the awareness about the importance and enjoyment, play and keeping fit.
Active School Flag committee:

There was great excitement around election time the candidates were putting up posters and slogans trying to win votes, there was great interest in this committee as everyone wanted to be involved in getting themselves and the whole school community active.

After school athletics
We have recently started after school athletics, this takes place on the school pitch on Wednesday evenings from 3pm - 3.45pm. Ms Howell has set out a running track (200m) with the help of Eamon Henry from from Offaly sports partnership to whom we are very grateful. This of course is weather dependent and on wet days there will be a circuit set up in parish hall consisting of hurdles, ladders etc.
Each class from 3rd to 6th are keeping a record of the distances they run, the aim of this is to run a whole school marathon 26miles / 44km.
On wet days when the children are unable to go outside at break and lunch times for activities they will be doing 10 mins of the operation transformation Step it up programme in their class rooms.
Each class has been allocated a bag of PE equipment to be used at break times this consists of skipping rope, frisbie, balls, rackets, hula hoops etc. Special thanks to Miss Maher for organising these.
